R.I.P to Gary Burger of The Monks.
The Monks were five GI’s in Germany who upon discharge stayed in Germany and formed a band that defied commercial expectations. Their music was abrasive and unsettling as was their image. Unfortunately it was 1966 and not 1976. However they left a legacy that continues to be appreciated. I was quite happy to have seen them play at a reunion gig over 10 years ago and to have met Mr. Burger briefly that night.
Here they are in Germany with an audience that does not quite know what to make of them performing “Complication.”
